Writing in the Yorkshire Post today John Redwood argues that ID cards should be scrapped to help save the British economy. Estimates of the cost of the Database State vary, but the Intercept Modernisation program (that seeks to store details of all our phone calls, web browsing patterns and emails) alone is estimated to cost £12 Billion. During a recession sums like this mean the difference between people keeping or losing their livelihoods. When the economy was going well ID cards and the Database state were a threat to our Liberty, now it’s going badly they are a threat to our public services.
